I'm not saying you need a subscription to anything - there is a bunch of content available without subscribing to any service. However, I find a Hulu Plus subscription and my Amazon Prime subscription come in handy. Amazon Prime membership gives you access to tons of movies and TV shows via Amazon Instant. HBO - that's another issue.

Do the math - DirecTV will run you a good $100+/month for HD channels and HBO, plus receiver rentals. Amazon Prime goes for $80/yr, Hulu Plus is $8/month. So, for about $250 in hardware costs (3 Roku devices plus an HD antenna), you cover your conversion expenses in about 2.5 months. The monthly cost of content is then negligible.

You can even spend a little more money on additional paid content and end up with a much smaller monthly cost than DirecTV.

So how is it going? I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I am fairly tech savvy but not sure I understand the whole ROKU thing yet.
I understand putting up an external HD antenna for the locals
But do I need a subscription for things like NETFLIX, HBO, etc. Is it with each channel? If so, wouldn't that add up pretty fast? What about HGTV, DIYTV, etc?
I am an Amazon Prime member though.

I also am approx 45 from Chicago, to the north.
